How does Deep Relief work?
Deep Relief products are topical analgesics – they have effective active ingredients that are absorbed quickly into the skin. Deep Relief penetrates deep at the site of pain to stimulate nerve endings and distract the brain’s sensory receptors. Deep Relief begins to work on contact, right where it hurts.

This is different to oral analgesics, which are ingested and dissolve to release their ingredients over time into the bloodstream and throughout the body.

Why use a topical analgesic pain reliever?
Topical analgesics are safe and effective treatment options that provide fast acting pain relief on contact in convenient easy to use products.
• Deep Relief products are an effective alternative to oral analgesics. They minimize the risk of side effects by delivering the medicine to the painful area rather than into the bloodstream to circulate to parts of your body that do not require pain relief.
• Deep Relief can be used in conjunction with oral medication if necessary.
• Deep Relief products offer fast acting, targeted pain relief on contact, right where it hurts. You do not need to wait to feel relief.
• Deep Relief offers a variety of convenient formats that are portable and easy to apply.

Ice melts and can burn skin if applied for long periods of time – Deep Relief cooling products last longer than ice and can go anywhere you do.
• Deep Relief offers a variety of convenient formats including patches, gels and spray.
• Handsfree applicator and spray are designed for areas that are too tender to touch.

Heating pads are bulky and difficult to apply to some areas – Deep Relief warming products stay right where applied, begin to work on contact and can be worn under clothes.
• Several Deep Relief products offer handsfree applications for painful areas that may be too tender to touch.
• Deep Relief products last for hours and allow you to continue with your daily activities.

What makes some Deep Relief products feel warm?
Some Deep Relief products contain the active ingredient Methyl Salicylate that is absorbed by the skin to help stimulate circulation. Increased blood flow triggers a warming sensation in most people. Other Deep Relief products contain Capsaicin that is made from the seeds of hot peppers, causing a warming sensation when applied.

When do I need a hot topical treatment?
• To treat everyday aches and pains such as tired, sore or over stretched muscles.
• To treat more painful conditions such as rheumatic pain, backache, sciatica, fibrositis and lumbago.
• Before and after exercise, when necessary and to treat minor sports injuries.
Heat helps to relax stiff muscles and joints, as well as re-oxygenate tense, painful tissue.
Heat should not be used when there is swelling because heat increases the blood flow to the injury causing further swelling.

What makes some Deep Relief products feel cold?
Deep Relief cooling products contain Menthol. Menthol has been used for centuries because of its therapeutic qualities. Menthol simulates the skin’s cold receptors, producing a cooling effect. It does not actually change the skin’s temperature, but rather, produces the sensation of temperature change that triggers the body to restrict blood flow, which reduces swelling.

When do I need cold treatment?
Ice pain relief is the appropriate treatment for inflammation and swelling. If you are not sure, always go for cold.
Deep Relief cooling products decreases blood flow to the affected area and temporarily numbs it to reduce swelling and pain.

Why should I use a cold treatment instead of ice?
Cold treatment is recommended immediately for acute injuries and to reduce swelling. Deep Relief cooling products are an effective and convenient alternative to ice.
• Ice melts can burn the skin when applied directly for prolonged periods.
• It is often difficult to hold an ice pack on an injured area – Deep Relief products stay where applied and continue to work for hours.
• Ice is not always readily available. Deep Relief cooling products are available in patch, gel, spray and handsfree formats, which can easily be taken with you wherever you go.

What are Counter-Irritants?

Counter-Irritants are substances that relieve pain by distracting the body’s transmission of pain signals through the introduction of either a cooling or burning sensation. Capsaicin, eucalyptus oil, methyl salicylates, camphor and menthol are examples of counter-irritants that provide a tingling, pain relieving sensation to dilate blood vessels, re-oxygenate the tissues and relax muscles.

What is Methyl Salicylate?
Methyl Salicylate is the main component of wintergreen, sweet birch and betula oils. These naturally occurring chemicals are safe and effective pain relievers that also reduce inflammation. Unlike Aspirin, Methyl Salicylate creates a pleasant local warming sensation and does not harm the intestines or stomach. Methyl Salicylate is effectively used as a topical pain reliever.

Can I use Methyl Salicylate with other medications?

Topical salicylates have been used safely for centuries to soothe muscle aches. As with any over-the-counter medications you should always consult your physician, pharmacists or healthcare practitioner before using multiple medications whether topical or not. Methyl Salicylate should not be used if you are taking anticoagulant medication. It is also advised not to use Methyl Salicylates with other products containing salicylates. Methyl Salicylate should not be applied to open wounds or damaged skin and should never be ingested. Always read and follow the package cautions and directions before applying Deep Relief products.

How does Capsaicin work?
When capsaicin is applied and absorbed by the skin, it reduces the amount of a natural chemical known as substance P, which is present in painful joints. Substance P is believed to be involved in two processes central to arthritis: the release of enzymes that produce inflammation and the transmission of pain impulses from the joints to the central nervous system. By blocking the production and release of substance P, capsaicin reduces inflammation and provides arthritis pain relief.

How do I choose between a rub,
spray or patch?

Rubs can be massaged into the affected area to help stimulate circulation, as well as relax and oxygenate tense, painful tissue.
Touch free sprays and handsfree applicators can be applied directly onto the affected area without the need for massage - suitable for hard to reach places and areas too tender to touch.
A patch is ideal for an area that is difficult to apply a conventional icepack or heating pad. A patch stays in place and works for hours.
